The Croft
Crofting is deeply ingrained in highland heritage, with a history dating back to 18th century there is not a more authentic way to experience the highlands. Whether you’re the type to pull on you wellies and get stuck in, or you’d rather sit back, relax and watch the animals go about their day, Bluebell Croft offers the perfect getaway from the rush of the modern world.
Poultry
The fields surrounding the croft are home to our much loved free-range ducks, geese and chickens. Who enjoy a peaceful life, with plenty of space to roam forage and relax.
As part of our efforts to conserve the fertility and health of our fields, we have a small project in which we move the chicken around the croft in portable coops. This allows them to naturally scratch up nutrient-draining weeds and dead grass, helping to clear the way for healthy pasture growth. Their manure adds fertility back to the soil, supporting biodiversity and stronger grasses for our grazing animals and wildlife.
We are proud to offer eggs farmed with care and respect for both the animals and land. It’s this healthy, happy lifestyle which often leads to our flock being complimented on the rich flavour and the golden yolks of their eggs, a real taste of the countryside you can savour. Whether you’re staying with us or are somewhere local you are more than welcome to enjoy these fresh eggs, which can be found on our honesty stall for just £2.
The spring and summer bring a new wave of life to our flock, with the incubator up and running there are often many fluffy baby chicks eager to snuggle up in your hands and cheep away softly.
Sheep
We are passionate about our rare breeds here at Bluebell Croft therefore we make every effort to aid in the conservation of Castlemilk Moorits, who you will likely see roaming the croft.
These sheep are a rare and native breed originally bred for their elegant appearance and fine wool. Castlemilk Moorits are sought after for their rich brown wool by many hand-spinners and crafters. Their name comes from the Castlemilk Estate where they were first bred and “moorit” from their naturally moorland coloured fleece which, blends beautifully with the hills and heather.
Our lambs are the centrepiece of the spring season, with the lambing field being located in perfect view of the guest houses and their gradens. It’s impossible not to fall in love with these mischievous, curious bundles of wool. Many guests find these lambs to be the highlight of their stay, with most of our lambs being more than happy to have a cuddle!
We’re incredibly proud of our Castlemilk Moorits and always look forward to taking them to the Sunart Show, where we get to celebrate not just their rare beauty, but also the strong spirit of our crofting community.
Goats
We have two cheeky goats often found in the top field of the croft going about their day. These two spend their days quietly nibbling through brambles and weeds, and naturally targetting invasive specicies helping us care for the land in a gentle and sustainable manner. Their hooves aerate the soil as they roam and they even play a role in fire prevention by reducing the dry flammable undergrowth.
Best of all they do all of this while keeping us entertained with their quirky personalities. Whether they’re climbing, munching or saying “hello” through the fence, they are very much part of the team.
Garden Produce
The croft features a large 50ft polytunnel and orchard, enabling us to grow a wide variety of fruits and veg. We take great pleasure in turning much of our harvest to be enjoyed year round by: us, our neighbours and guests alike. These growing spaces also support biodiversity by attracting beneficial insects such bees and butterflies which play a vital role in pollination and the health of the local ecosystem.
Much like our eggs our harvests are bursting with flavour and avaible through request, bringing the taste of the croft straight to you table.
